<h4>First, I’d like you to know the following things about me: I’m the Executive Director of the Acton Food Pantry; I’m a long-time civil rights activist; and I attended Newton South High School and so did my two children. </h4>I love Newton. This is where I grew up, and the place where my husband and I have chosen to raise our family. Serving as your Councilor will allow me to continue to give back to our community.I have a long history of community advocacy in Newton, from co-founding community organizations like Friends of Newton Centre, historic preservation efforts such as working to save the former Newton Centre Library<img src="https://run.imgix.net/56519eac-fd6a-4a76-8d9a-917cc05f7c0e/a039ee74-77b6-46b1-a5ad-5b0be13a4482/a039ee74-77b6-46b1-a5ad-5b0be13a4482.jpeg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C3154%2C1822&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="left" alignwidth="40" tiltdirection="left" variant="framed">from privatization, helping our high school musicians save the NSHS Jazz program, helping our elementary schools students save the strings programming, co-organizing the Ukraine Peace Rally at City Hall, running a pandemic fundraiser - <a style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text)" href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/07/09/metro/signs-gratitude-frontline-workers-sprout-up-around-newton/?event=event12" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Signs of Gratitude</a> - to raise money for the Newton relief efforts, to highlighting food insecurity in our community through a free community dinner, Newton Eats. I am running because I love Newton and have always been committed to our community. I was born here and raised here, I’ve spent almost 40 years in this great City, and I wouldn’t have raised my family anywhere else. Some of the issues I care about and have contributed tirelessly to are:<ul><li>Fighting to make sure our schools remain competitive and the best in the state,</li><li>Supporting vibrant village centers through transparent, collaborative representation and data-driven, fiscally responsible leadership,</li><li>Protecting our green and open spaces, and enforcing our commitment to a cleaner future through advocating for policies like reducing emissions,</li><li>Defending Newton’s arts programs from cuts and losses, working hand in hand with other concerned residents,</li><li>Combatting antisemitism and all forms of hate and bigotry</li><li>and taking care of each other and our community, through the good times but also the bad. </li></ul>I know this city. I know how to navigate City Hall. And I know I will be a tireless advocate for the people of Newton. I will lead by listening and acting in the best interests of our neighborhoods. Our city faces an incredible deal of change in the near future. As your Ward 6 City Councilor-at-Large, I look forward to helping residents and working to make Newton an even better place in which to live and work. <h4>My Story</h4><a style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text)" href="http://www.barenberg.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">My mother</a> bought our home, a two-family in Newton Centre, in 1970. I attended Temple Emanuel Pre-school (my family are still members), Mason Rice Elementary, Brown Middle School, and Newton South High School. After putting myself <img src="https://run.imgix.net/56519eac-fd6a-4a76-8d9a-917cc05f7c0e/b55c5f11-e413-4702-bd19-1e74fc6fc087/b55c5f11-e413-4702-bd19-1e74fc6fc087.jpeg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C1633%2C1738&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="left" alignwidth="40" tiltdirection="left" variant="framed">through UMass Amherst, I moved to England to serve as the first Executive Director of the newly formed <a style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text)" href="http://www.yre.org.uk/about.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Youth against Racism in Europe</a>, which was formed to combat instances of racist violence that were being perpetrated by neo-Nazi groups against Black and brown people. I worked especially closely with the Bangladeshi community in East London. After nearly a decade in England I returned to Newton, where my husband Ken and I have raised our two kids. Shoshi attended Newton South and Bowdoin College and is starting her first teaching job this fall, and Ari is a rising Junior at Columbia University. After returning to the U.S., I served in leadership positions in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors: founded three small businesses, worked as VP of Marketing for Management Roundtable, and served as the Executive Director of the <a style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text)" href="https://rrforum.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Responsible Retailing Forum</a>. I am currently the Executive Director of the <a style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text)" href="https://www.actonfoodpantry.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Acton Food Pantry</a> in Acton, MA, where I help in the <a style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text)" href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/06/02/lifestyle/how-organize-food-drive-with-your-kids/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">fight against food and housing insecurity</a>. I am an active volunteer in our community:<ul><li>Co-founder of the <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/07/09/metro/signs-gratitude-frontline-workers-sprout-up-around-newton/?event=event12" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Signs of Gratitude</a> project that raised over $5,000 for Newton Pandemic relief funds</li><li>Co-founder <a href="http://friendsofnewtoncentre.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Friends of Newton Centre</a></li><li>Board member of the <a href="https://www.mapreventionalliance.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Massachusetts Addiction Prevention Alliance (MAPA)</a>, which provides resources and advocates for sound drug and alcohol policies to protect the health and well-being of youth</li><li>Member Newton Centre Task Force (appointed by then Mayor Cohen) and <a href="https://www.newtonma.gov/home/showdocument?id=70061&amp;t=637571836353159930" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">co-authored the Final Report</a></li><li>Served on the committee to evaluate proposals for <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheCentreat1294/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">1294 Centre Street</a> (the former Newton Centre Branch Library); urged city leadership to return the building to public use rather than privatize it</li><li>Oversaw the acquisition and care of the Artful Piano on the Newton Centre green (during a City hiatus from the program). I am currently a Piano Pal with my husband</li><li>Helped lead efforts to improve traffic flow at the intersection of Nahanton and Winchester Streets, leading up to Wells Avenue and the JCC </li></ul>

I will: <ul><li>Strive to ensure that those that would like to age in place know all the city options available to them.</li><li>Ensure that the city is doing the best they can to help facilitate this by looking at the different options and trying to make sure the policies that are currently in place are not prohibiting people from taking full advantage of them.</li><li>Advocate for those that wish to downsize, to build housing suitable for seniors.&nbsp;</li></ul>

We must protect our natural environment. As development in our Garden City increases, so should green spaces and parks both small and large in order to offset the impact. We should highlight and protect our scenic spots and ensure they are properly maintained. I will advocate for increasing open spaces for active and passive recreation throughout the city.As we face the onslaught of climate change, we must find a way to preserve our trees. Too often, decisions are made to sacrifice old-growth trees. We must find a way to preserve this old-growth canopy, treat the trees we do have, and work to replace the ones we have lost. As part of this work I would note the need for a whole-of-issue biodiversity plan for Newton:A biodiversity plan would serve as a reference guide for policymakers and interested parties. These include but are not limited to determining the amount of green space needed in new housing projects, the continued and sustained preservation of small parks, and how to enhance the standard of living for all Newton residents, including access to fresh food through community gardens.

I have been a tireless advocate of our school system for a long time–a system that furnished both me and my children with a world-class education. Schools are the foundation of our great City and represent the lion's (and tiger's!) share of our annual budget. Our school communities are what hold us together and makes Newton strong. Part of what keeps our schools outstanding is the arts education and rigorous curriculum. A strong academics program includes not only the fundamental academic subjects but also art, music, athletics, and electives. We need to work together to keep our music lessons and orchestras and that we strive to fund our schools to keep them competitive and our children educated. We also must address the social and emotional needs of our students that have arisen in our schools during the pandemic.I am endorsing Lisa Gordon for Ward 6 City Council. Lisa is smart, hard-working, does her homework and is an independent thinker. I worked with Lisa when Newton’s elementary school strings program was going to be eliminated as part of budget cuts for NPS, and she worked collaboratively to prevent that from happening.&nbsp; — Patrick Song, Mason-Rice Parent As a member of an advocacy group of parents, students and alumni to save music programming from budget cuts at Newton South, I saw Lisa approach our discussions in an organized, data-driven, and consensus-building manner. Schools are the foundation of our great City and represent the lion's (and tiger's!) share of our annual budget. Our school communities are what hold us together and makes Newton strong.

We must integrate and support organizations that seek to enhance our community. Only by city government, community groups, individuals, and all members of our community will we achieve the goals set out in Newton’s Climate Action Plan.An increasing number of Newton homes are experiencing flooding or sewer issues during big storms. We must plan ahead for the changes that are heading our way and plan for the future. New construction should have more green space.Additionally, our transportation system in Newton desperately needs to connect our villages. Finding paths through our village system to connect all of us should be a resource readily available to our community.Navigating Newton should not be a frustrating experience. We need well-maintained streets, sidewalks, open spaces, athletic fields, and playgrounds. For example, Newton is home to Bullough's Pond and Crystal Lake, two of the aquatic gems of Newton. These are great public resources that have not received the care and attention that they deserve. We need to rebuild the bathhouse and the public swimming area and expand the hours of operation, as well as address the Cronin’s Cove public area and boat launch, and the parking near the public swim area. We can do a better job at increasing the ability for people to go swimming all year around and access the water.Members of the Bullough's Pond Dam Working Group and the Bullough's Pond Association are advocating for the safest-possible dam rehabilitation project for this more than 360-year-old, continuously-working, treasured colonial dam. They are advocating for a plan that utilizes the most up-to-date dam safety technology; stops dam overtopping and downstream flooding; and want to avoid unnecessarily cutting down and paving over much of the historic Laundry Brook Forest with concrete blocks.I agree with their preservation strategy. Beloved landmarks like these do not exist for as long as they do without the tireless work of groups like Bullough's Pond Association, Friends of Crystal Lake, Crystal Lake Conservancy, and it will be my chief priority that these constituents feel heard and are listened to.

I support Newton’s Climate Action Plan and Newton’s Safe Routes to schools. We must integrate and support organizations that seek to enhance our community. Only by city government, community groups, individuals, and all members of our community will we achieve the goals set out in Newton’s Climate Action Plan.

Combating antisemitism means not only responding to incidents when they occur, but also fostering education, dialogue, and solidarity so our city remains welcoming and inclusive for all.&nbsp;

Newton must be a community where everyone feels safe and respected. Antisemitism has no place here, and I am committed to calling it out clearly and working with schools, local organizations, and law enforcement to prevent hate in all its forms.

Fighting Antisemitism and Discrimination

We consistently plan inadequately and struggle to fund basic City improvements. As a systems thinker I will: <ul><li>Identify our most needed expenditures.</li><li>Seek solutions for ongoing fiscal challenges.</li><li>Analyze our budget for cost-saving solutions.</li><li>Stop spending on needless consultant studies and listen to outcomes when we do.</li><li>Strive to set our City up for long-term fiscal success to ensure our children and future generations are not still paying for the deficits of our past.</li></ul>

Long-term fiscal stability is a priority in Newton. Currently, Newton City spending is far outpacing Newton resident’s household income. We consistently plan incorrectly and never have money for basic City improvements.

I am someone who prioritizes representation and always strives to do the right thing. I am an excellent, non-judgmental listener, hard worker, and kind to others. I have worked with a lot of people from different backgrounds: helping seniors in a local nursing home while in high school; running an international organization fighting racism and promoting civil rights; and my current job as the executive director of a food pantry where we help the most vulnerable populations in Massachusetts. Through these varied experiences, I have learned how to build consensus among those with very different viewpoints. I don’t just talk about my values – I go out and take action. Lastly, I try to be kind and believe that everyone deserves dignity and respect. That is how I will approach my work as your next Ward 6 Councilor-at-large.

Newton needs an independent councilor who can both lead and cooperate with others. I am someone who prioritizes representation and always strives to do the right thing. I am an excellent, non-judgmental listener, hard worker, and kind to others.

In order to provide varied housing we must plan thoughtfully for the infrastructure needs and especially for our schools and any associated population growth. We must also preserve housing that is currently more affordable. Having different forms of housing such as above commercial buildings in village centers and townhouses and multi-families will help with this. However, only partnering with developers for our affordable needs will only increase the cost of living in Newton with rents in excess of $5,000/month for a two bedroom. Since 2020 Newton has approved, but not necessarily built, 3700 units or an 11% increase in our housing. Around 50 of those units are part of the recently passed, by-right, MBTA communities act, but we can expect more in the future. The work to plan for a welcoming and diverse Newton needs to be done now and not only after we see a considerable amount of new development with no thoughtful planning done.
